Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program Social Worker (BHIP)

The Behavioral Health Interdisciplinary Program (BHIP) Social Worker is located at the Danville VA Medical Center. The purpose of the BHIP Social Worker is to provide clinical social work services as part of an interdisciplinary team in the Mental Health Service. Services include provision of case management, psychotherapy, advocacy, crisis intervention and coordination of linkages to other VA or community service providers. This is accomplished in collaboration with other members of the team or other services as indicated. The work is primarily outpatient but could include inpatient services as needed. Major Duties:
Provides veterans and their caregivers with individual, family and group therapy. The purpose of such counseling is to deal with psychosocial stressors and other identified areas of difficulty. Completes psychosocial assessment of the Veteran in collaboration with the interdisciplinary treatment team, the Veteran, family members and significant others. In conjunction with the interdisciplinary team, will participate in developing a mutually agreed upon treatment plan with the Veteran and family (when possible), which includes Veteran-centered goals, objectives and interventions. Acts as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on VA and/or community resources. Will collaborate with other service providers in reassessing the Veteran's needs. Educates the Veteran and/or caregiver of available services and assisting them in establishing necessary referrals based on the Veteran's preference or that of his surrogate decision-maker. Responsible for maintaining and using a current social work resource file of VA and community services and programs and enhancing the content to the benefit of the Veteran. Will act as an advocate when it serves the best interest of the Veteran/family. When feasible, will educate and encourage the Veteran/family to advocate on their own behalf, to foster a sense of independence and empowerment. Makes rapid assessments and develop crisis management plans for admission to mental health programs. Reviews progress notes from other providers and accurately determines the strengths and needs of each Veteran being referred for mental health services. Educates the Veteran, their family, and the team of all options available to them and collaborates with the Veteran and family on the preferred option. Enters all Veteran/family contacts in the electronic record using approved formats and templates. Records all clinical intervention whether by telephone or face to face in the electronic progress note in a complete, confidential, and professional manner to ensure information on the Veteran is shared with other VA staff. Must be a citizen of the United States. Must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j. Education:
Must have a master's degree in social work (MSW) from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Licensure. Must possess a license or certification by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Exception:
VHA may waive the licensure or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified, pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examinations. This exception only applies up to the full performance level. For grade levels above the full performance level, the candidate must be licensed or certified. Social Worker, GS-9:
This is the entry level grade for the GS-185 social work series and is used for social workers with less than one year of post-MSW experience and for social workers who are not yet licensed or certified at the independent practice level. Social workers at the GS-9 level are working toward completion of prerequisites for licensure or certification. In addition, the candidates must demonstrate the KSAs:
Ability to work with Veterans and family members from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational, and other diversified backgrounds utilizing counseling skills. Ability to access the psychosocial functioning and needs of Veterans and their family members, and to formulate and implement a treatment plan, identifying the Veterans problems, strengths, weaknesses, coping skills, and assistance needed. Ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups to achieve treatment goals. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive, problem solving, or crisis intervention techniques. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate with clients, staff, and representatives of community agencies. Fundamental knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities, and treatment procedures. This includes acute, chronic, and traumatic illnesses/injuries; common medications and their effects/side effects; and medical terminology. Social Worker, GS-11:
Requires a minimum of one year of post-MSW experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the field of health care or other social work related settings, OR Education:
In addition to meeting basic requirements, a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the KSAs:
Knowledge of community resources, how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services, and ability to coordinate services. Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diversified backgrounds. Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses, disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute, chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries, common medications and their effects/side effects, and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan. Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals, families, and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric, medical, and social problems to achieve treatment goals. Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers, social work graduate students, and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. The work is primarily sedentary. Physical demands do not exceed those of a typical office setting. There may be some walking, standing, twisting, turning, sitting, pushing, bending, repetitive keyboarding, or carrying of light items.
